MIPS
Instruktionen pro Sekunde (IPS, englisch Instructions per Second), meist als Millionen Instruktionen pro Sekunde (MIPS, Million instructions per second, Mega instructions per second), ist ein Maß für die Leistungsfähigkeit der zentralen Recheneinheit (Prozessor) eines Computers. Es gibt an, wie viele Maschinenbefehle ein Mikroprozessor pro Sekunde ausführen kann: 1 MIPS bedeutet, er kann eine Million Maschinenbefehle pro Sekunde ausführen.
Da Maschinensprachen von Prozessortypen unterschiedlicher Architektur oft stark differierende Befehlssätze aufweisen (z.B. RISC ggü. CISC), ist ein Vergleich reiner MIPS-Zahlen meist nicht besonders aussagekräftig. Aus diesem Grund wird MIPS vereinzelt auch scherzhaft als "Misleading Information to Promote Sales" (Irreführende Information zur Verkaufsförderung) oder auch als "Meaningless Indication/Information about Processor Speed" (Bedeutungslose Angabe/Information zur Geschwindigkeit eines Prozessors) interpretiert.
