Mattel Electronics is a division of Mattel Inc. one of the worlds largest toy and games manufacturers and importers. Their sole venture into the dedicated chess computer market came in 1980 with the Mattel Computer Chess. This was the first handheld LCD chessboard based chess computer. It was also featured an early Barnes, Craig and Julio Kaplan program, probably the first in a dedicated chess computer. Mattel Electronics are better known for their video games. The popular Intellivision games console was released in 1979 and in 1981 they issued a chess program for it, USCF Chess.
